Construction of the Southern Cross network began in March 1998. The Ready for Service (RFS) for Phase A of the network - comprising nine stations and all segments except Segment D (from Hawaii to California) - was achieved on 15 November 2000. Completion of the fully protected loop network (RFS Phase B) was achieved on 28 February 2001.

 

The network is almost 30,500 km in length, including 28,900km of submarine cable incorporating around 500 optical repeaters (placed every 40-70km), and 1,600km of terrestrial cable. There are nine cable stations (two each in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and the US mainland, and one in Fiji) and an access point in San Jose, California.

Both cables in the network contain six optical fibres (3 fibre pairs) between Sydney and Hawaii, and eight fibres (4 fibre pairs) between Hawaii and the US West Coast.

Current Capability

 

The Southern Cross network capacity has undergone a number of major upgrades and expansions from the original 20Gbps in November 2000.

The current expansion (Phase H) will increase total lit network capacity to 2.7 Terabits per second from December 2013, and will utilise 40Gbps and 100Gbps wavelength technology.

Southern Cross was originally designed to deliver 120Gbps of fully protected capacity (240Gbps across the network). Following the introduction of the latest 40Gbps and 100Gbps technology the current system potential is estimated at >12 Tbps.
