SNOC upgrades improve real-time reporting

Southern Cross’s Network Operations Centre (SNOC) has completed the final stage of a major Operational Support Systems (OSS) implementation onsite at the operations centre in Auckland. The OSS is used to configure the Southern Cross Cable Network and to undertake network performance and fault management analysis on capacity which has been activated by Southern Cross customers.
SNOC Manager Mike Schwarz said a series of upgrades to the OSS had been carried over the past three years and had involved integrating several different software components to make a centralised Operations Support System.

“The integration of the OSS means that the SNOC can now automate many of the transactions which would have previously been undertaken manually,” Mike Schwarz said.

“The new system is a lot easier to use and will improve both the efficiency and the quality of information which we will be able to provide to Southern Cross and its customers.”

By integrating three key software components, the new OSS will allow the SNOC to produce near real time reporting on network performance and fault workflow management, giving landing site operators and support contractors easy access to relevant and accurate information via a web interface. The OSS, which interfaces with a network management system provided by Alcatel will give staff at the control centre the ability to quickly analyse the probable cause and customer impact of any faults occurring.

To further enhance the reliability and resilience of the system, the OSS has been replicated at a remote site in Auckland. If operations from Auckland are not available Southern Cross’s network management capability can also be temporarily supported via a back-up site in Sydney.
