CEO christens Tyco Cable Ship

Southern Cross President and CEO Fiona Beck was honoured to become the God Mother of the new Cable Ship CS Tyco Durable at the ship’s christening in Portland, Oregon in December.

The CS Tyco Durable is one of six new ships in the ‘Reliance Class’ vessels which will form the foundation of Tyco’s new telecommunications fleet.

Speaking at the christening, Ms Beck blessed the ship and said that she hoped it would prove to have all of the qualities of a ‘durable’ ship, being strong, robust, resilient and long lasting.

“As the President and Chief Executive of a submarine cable company, I can tell you that I am vitally aware of the importance of providing both reliability and durability in a customer service environment,” she said.

The ‘Reliance Class’ vessels feature dynamic positioning; an automated cable lay management system, a state-of-the-art bridge, an automated engine room, a purpose built ROV and plow launch and recovery systems, along with many other innovative advancements.

Ms Beck reported that the ship launch, which was attended by about 200 people, had gone very well, with the highly important ceremonial bottle of champagne successfully breaking over the CS Tyco Durable’s bow on the first strike.
