Southern Cross UpgradeDate:14/05/2009 |
|
Southern Cross is currently evaluating an RFP for an upgrade of capacity in FY 2009/10.
The two Southern Cross submarine communications cables were first commissioned in November 2000 and January 2001 at a cost of USD1.3 billion to provide Australasian broadband users with 80Gbps of international capacity to the US West coast where global Internet hubs are located.
Each cable was upgraded to 240 Gbps and further upgraded to 330 Gbps by the first quarter of 2008 and to 430Gbs by the fourth quarter of 2008. Total capacity is currently 860Gbps, just less than four times our nearest competitor.
With the currently planned upgrade, capacity will be further increased by at least 800 Gbps using some or all of 10 Gb, 20Gb and 40Gb technologies.
The advance of technology and increase in capacity has allowed SX to undertake initiatives which assist our customers and community, such as SX Transport in support of the academic industry, and Drop Restoration increasing customer network reliability at no additional cost.
As we continue to upgrade we will strive to continue to bring customer benefit, not only in increased reliability and reduced pricing but in community and insutry supporting initiatives.

DID YOU KNOW?
We hold the world record for the plough burial of cable in a water depth of 1,610m over the Lord Howe Rise between Sydney and Fiji.
It takes only seven hundredths of a second for information to go from Australia to the US on the Southern Cross Network.
Over 2,100 km of our cable is heavily armoured for added protection.
